About Me

I am a writer who also has a passion for nutrition.  As with many people, I was forced into taking a serious look into my own nutrition through a health scare a few years ago.  I developed rather severe preeclampsia during my second pregnancy and because of this, my daughter was born two months premature.

After my daughter was a few months old, as I was trying to get my life back together, I stumbled across a wonderful book -- The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron.  This book was such an eye-opener for me and ignited the transformation of my life.  I suddenly understood why I was different, about my intuitive, highly attuned characteristics -- and that despite my past frustrations, it was all good.  Ms. Aron gave me ideas as to how to work with my sensitivities in such a way as to not be limited by them.

Now, I'll sound a bit like Hermione from Harry Potter here, but after reading The Highly Sensitive Person, it was like book after book opened up before me, each one with new and exciting discoveries building upon the last, propelling me to change, forcing me toward personal -- and nutritional -- growth.  The two really do go hand in hand.

Potatoes Not Prozac was the next step -- and a huge one it was.  This book by Kathleen DesMaison brought me to the realization that sugar truly was not my friend, that it was a drug in my system, and propelled me toward getting the refined white products out of my diet and to take my nutrition seriously.  Within a month of starting Dr. DesMaison's plan, I was feeling the best I'd felt in years.

Since that time, I've researched and refined my food program, struggling often along the way.  Each new book, each new discovery helped me learn what works, and what doesn't, for me.  I've developed not only a whole-foods mentality toward the choices I nourish myself with, but also a traditional, slow-down-and-take-time-with-your-food approach as well.  Fermented foods are great, as are slow-cooked meats, soaked grains and legumes, broths, and probiotic drinks -- that I prepare myself at home.

Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, who brought me down this ultimate path, is the book I consider now at the pinnacle of my learning and understanding.  Hers is the book I turn to the most for nutrition information and fabulous recipes.  Her advice is the philosophy that mostly guides my mission behind this website.

I hope you will enjoy what this website has to offer.  I will post information, links, and recipes as I'm able to do so, but I've discovered over the last few years that I've run this website, that as a result of severe spam attacks, viruses, and the like, I cannot post personal contact information here.  I'm rotten at responding to e-mails anyway.  The best way to communicate with me is through my blog at TurkishDiet.blogspot.com or by following the tab at the left.

Happy eating!
